Bio

Emily Cox is a versatile performer who has been seen across the nation in musical theater, cabaret, opera and solo orchestral works.

Described as a ‘gifted singer with an endearing voice and not to be missed comedic timing’, her numerous roles include Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, the Beggar Woman in “Sweeney Todd”, Berta in Il Barbiere di Seville, Marian Paroo in “The Music Man”, Despina in Cosi fan Tutte, Alida Slade in Roman Fever, Queenie in ‘The Wild Party’, Tanya in “Mamma Mia!”, Isabel in Pirates of Penzance, and Cinderella in “Into the Woods”. In 2014, Ms. Cox made her Chicago debut in correlation with the Chicago Summer Opera Series.

Since that time, Ms. Cox has established herself as an active performer throughout the Chicagoland area. As comfortable in the classical world as the contemporary, Ms. Cox served as the Soprano Resident Artist with Chicago Opera Playhouse for both their 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons. Other Chicagoland credits include the Chicago Fringe Festival, Uptown Underground, Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, the “”D:Activate”” concert series in correlation with the City of Chicago, the Chicago Folks Operetta, Music for Theatre Chicago, Petite Opera, Main Street Opera, Devonshire Playhouse, Davenport’s Piano Bar, Classical Revolution, the Floating Opera Company, and NONOpera. Directing credits include BRAVO Arts Academy, Ovation Arts Academy, 4Evermore Dance, Chicago Opera Theater for Teens, Opera Ouvert and Davenport’s Piano Bar. Ms. Cox is an active member of Opera on Tap, Chicago Cabaret Professionals, Chicago Opera Theatre’s Educational Subcommittee, the Illinois Theatre Professionals, the Chicago Vocal Arts Consortium, and New Brew Chicago.

An enthusiastic supporter of new music, Emily is deeply involved in the development of new works through the nation.

Revered for her work in the contemporary musical scene, she has become a regular performer of new works by international and local composers alike. This past spring, Ms Cox premiered two new works by Elizabeth Rudolph as part of the inaugural Chicago chapter’s SongSLAM Competition, in conjunction with The Fourth Coast Ensemble. Her most recent appearance as The Patient in the world premiere of the electronic opera, “Open Wide”, received ample praise from critics and audiences alike. The work was produced in conjunction with the Electro-Acoustic Theatre Symposium and Curious Theatre Branch, and the production was re-upped for an extended run through July 2019 at the Prop Thtr. Ms. Cox currently serves as a founder of Acting Out, a nonprofit organization that produces new social justice and political works for fundraising opportunities. Her one-woman cabaret, “Swipe Left: Dating In the Windy City Blows”, was an Audience Favorite recommendation of both the 2018 Chicago Fringe Festival and the 2018 Elgin Fringe Festival; it is currently under consideration for the inaugural 2019 Chicago Cabaret Week. In 2018, Ms. Cox served as Managing Director with Underscore Theater, Chicagoland’s only company that specializes in the development of new musical theater works. Their 2018 new musical, “Haymarket”, received a Jeff Award for Best New Musical, and several of their productions have been Jeff Recommended by the Chicago Tribune. In 2016, Ms. Cox worked in conjunction with local composer Christopher Preissing and NONOpera in the world premiere of his immersive opera project, “Thunder, Perfect Mind”, as well as an audiobook project entitled “In Search of Marietta Black”. In the summer of 2017, she acted as Production Manager for the Summer Music Series with Scapigliatura Magazine. The Series featured twenty-two individual concerts across the Chicagoland area, involving over 100 local artists and world-premiering 27 newly-composed works. Ms. Cox currently writes, produces and directs new musical works throughout the Chicagoland area.

Ms. Cox holds a Masters of Music from the University of Northern Colorado and Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Evansville; she graduated from both establishments with honors. She is currently a student of Mrs. Maria Lagios.
